"Your Customized coaching
sessions really work"
Peter Laband, Occidental Chemical Company, Houston, Texas
How successfully you handle your
relations with the media may make the difference between a major
"public relations disaster" and enhancing both your company's
image and your career. There is a "wrong" way and a "right" way
to handle relations with the media. Consider for a moment the
Exxon Valdez and Johnson & Johnson Tylenol event.
In 1982, when it was
discovered that some Tylenol capsules had been tampered with
and were contaminated with cyanide, Johnson & Johnson’s
CEO James Burke took immediate action. He was open, candid and
honest. As a result, he was able to get the press on his side
during the crisis. There was little damage to the company's
reputation.
On the other hand, Exxon's
Lawrence Rawl "stonewalled" journalists after the
Valdez oil spill. He visited the accident scene, but his TV
appearance in New York gave the impression that he didn't
think the problem was serious. What if he had been taped on
location with an oil-stained shirt, filthy pants and boots vs.
his clean studio presence in a sparkling white shirt, etc…?
The outcomes for the two
companies were totally different. Johnson & Johnson quickly
recovered from the problem. Today, Exxon is still having to
deal with the fallout.

Telephone Communications
Seminar
We offer a half day seminar for employees who regularly, or as
a back up, handle incoming telephone calls during a crisis or
an emergency situation.
Emergency Response Drills
We can help your organization rehearse your crisis plans and
help train your crisis management team. This realistic
simulation will prepare your staff for aggressive reporters,
and difficult to manage emergency situations.
