Crisis Management: 3
Reasons a Business
Crisis is Like Nuclear
War
Obviously you do not
want to be involved in a
nuclear war and I hope
that you will never be
involved in one. I
couldn't imagine anybody
that I would wish such
an experience
upon. However, in some
ways I think it provides
an apt description of
how things can seem
should your business be
faced with a crisis.
Whilst I am using a
nuclear war as metaphor
in this crisis
management article, the
main purpose of this
crisis management
article is to share with
you the best way to deal
with a crisis should
your business befall
one. It is not something
that you would wish to
happen but unfortunately
sometimes these things
do happen, no matter
what you try and do to
ensure that they don't.
Here are three things
that you need to do to
help your business deal
with a crisis.
You need to minimize
negative effects of
fallout through crisis
management- The worst
part of a nuclear war is
not necessarily the
explosion- it is the
fallout that can kill
you. The same thing can
be said of a business
crisis. The initial
explosion will not
define whether your
business survives. It is
how you deal with the
crisis going forward
that matters. Are you
prepared to make the
changes that need to be
made?
You need to know that
some events are bigger
than you are- Sometimes
events are bigger than
you are. I mean, you
cannot stop a nuclear
war yourself. Sometimes
a crisis may engulf you
no matter what you’re
preplanning. The sooner
you realize that there
are some conflicts that
you won't be able to
avoid, the sooner that
you can ensure that you
are prepared with crisis
management on how to
deal with some crisis
matters should they
unfortunately occur. You
need to be prepared for
all eventualities with a
crisis management plan.
You need to know that
avoiding a crisis is
better than dealing with
a crisis- Having said
that there are some
crisis events that you
cannot avoid; there are
some crisis events that
you can avoid with
crisis management
planning. Don't do
anything stupid and you
will find yourself in a
much safer position.
Have a crisis management
policy and make sure
your staff understands
it. You need to make
sure that everyone in
the business is on the
same crisis management
page.
You cannot avoid nuclear
war if it is going to
get you, like you cannot
avoid some business
crisis points. All you
can really do is ensure
that you are prepared
through crisis
management- to the best
of your ability.
