Crisis Management for the Government

We could say that the Government is like a big company. And to the extent that it has grown in size, positions and responsibilities to those it governs, the need of a good crisis management is of high priority.

The themes that run governments are difficult to understand and explain; their actions affect interests, many of which deal with issues involving people's sentiments and also face the advent of the unpredictable. Crisis management must be ongoing.

Therefore, governments remain in permanent crisis, since its inception until the completion of periods of each head of state.

And, almost as a rule, I have noticed that many of the public relations of government institutions have no interest in disclosing information to the public, care more about hiding information generated by the higher positioned people. They know very little about the issue of crisis management.

On one occasion I had a seminar on crisis management of public relations for several government institutions of a country, and in the end several communities expressed their helplessness as their leaders and ministers, have the attitude of fleeing in fear, have insecurity and mistrust, which makes it extremely difficult for the communication to work.

The secretaries of state, heads of autonomous institutions or other organizations that depend on the state budget tend to expect only positive press coverage and have the right to assume an automatic coverage of the news.

Recall that the media are characterized by drawing attention to negative news. A study by George Washington University believes that the negative news over positive have a ratio of 20 to 1.
In the case of governments, experts in the field of public relations for the government estimated that if a president has less than 60% coverage which is negative, feel happy because he is doing pretty well. Typically, the majority of news generated by a government tends to be negative.

Bad news also influences the process of decision making under pressure from the media for a swift response from authorities. This definitely affects the quality of decision.

We must be aware that actions taken daily by the State will never meet the needs of all sectors of the governed, there will always be areas that are affected, without a political component that is always present in all major decisions.

To this we add that many of the institutions of public service (telephone, water, police, electric power) do not provide a service so efficient, resulting in complaints and negative perceptions to be generated which are permanently inevitable.

If anyone has to have a good team of crisis management, this is precisely the government. The actions to take should always have a strategic vision that addresses all the scenarios that may arise as a result of any decision or action and be prepared to resolve the issue in the context of crisis management strategies.
