Our topic for Day 4 was Crisis Management and
Crisis Training. A major theme that emerged was the need for planning ahead, for example, through following an ongoing risk and communications process and by creating a
Crisis Training communications kit.
In other content, Kevin Dugan provides an excellent analysis of the Martha Stewart crisis, and interviews with two influential journalists, Dan Gillmor and Steve Outing, are available.
Some other interesting
Crisis Training ideas emerged:
1) Speed is of the essence in a
Crisis Training situation, the blogging can be the answer, as PR/communications has control over posting the content vs. waiting for the IT department.
2) Given the negative, cynical tendencies of mainstream media, the blogosphere can offer an alternative, more positive viewpoint of a crisis. Alice Marshall comments on this on the blogging in a Crisis post.
3) You can't treat bloggers the same as journalists, as they generally don't come from that background, and don't understand the intricacies of "off the record."
Crisis Training can prepare your PR/communication department.
