Recent technological
advances like the Internet have made it easier and more
affordable for more and more people to take part in
financial markets. Companies like E*Trade, Ameritrade
and Schwab.com have revolutionized the on-line trading
business and have made it more convenient for smaller or
independent investors to trade online with ease. Other,
more traditional companies such as Salomon Smith Barney
and mutual fund firms like Strong have augmented their
efforts by allowing individuals to place trades and sell
shares over the telephone. Yet, while technology has
obviously revolutionized the financial industry, it also
played a hand in a prolonged financial crisis that
gripped this country for over a two-year period starting
in late 2000. When markets take serious plunges and
undergo a crisis, leaving investors furious over
diminishing 401(k)s and lost investments, the media will
quickly look to financial companies to provide quick
answers. Not knowing how to handle a crisis with the
media can often exacerbate a crisis and potentially undo
a company’s reputation. Our Financial Crisis Media
Training is designed to help financial institution
professionals, government officials, corporate spokesmen
and other individuals deal with the difficult media
situations created by a financial crisis.
The one-day Financial Crisis Media Training workshop
focuses on providing those tasked with communicating to
the media during a moderate or severe financial crisis
with the tools and training skills required to handle
media relations without worrying investors and causing a
crisis to turn into a panic. Given the particularly
sensitive situations found during a financial crisis,
discussions during this interactive training workshop
focus on the economic consequences of a crisis. These
same training skills can also be used by individuals who
must simply answer to members of the print media,
electronic media or broadcast media seeking to gather
information or report on news during non-crisis
situations. Multiple simulation training sessions such
as press conferences and media presentations are
utilized to provide participants with crisis media skill
practice. Coached training sessions provide participants
with feedback from a crisis media training instructor.
Financial crisis issues and the messages that must be
conveyed during a crisis are also discussed. Time is
spent working on training modules, application
exercises, Q&A sessions and other training
activities to facilitate learning in this crisis media
workshop.
