How successfully you handle your relations with the media may make the difference between a major "public relations disaster" and enhancing both your company's image and your career. There is a "wrong" way and a "right" way to handle relations with the media. Consider for a moment the Exxon Valdez and Johnson & Johnson Tylenol event.
In 1982, when it was discovered that some Tylenol capsules had been tampered with and were contaminated with cyanide, Johnson & Johnson’s CEO James Burke took immediate action. He was open, candid and honest. As a result, he was able to get the press on his side during the crisis. There was little damage to the company's reputation.
On the other hand, Exxon's Lawrence Rawl "stonewalled" journalists after the Valdez oil spill. He visited the accident scene, but his TV appearance in New York gave the impression that he didn't think the problem was serious. What if he had been taped on location with an oil-stained shirt, filthy pants and boots vs. his clean studio presence in a sparkling white shirt, etc…?
The outcomes for the two companies were totally different. Johnson & Johnson quickly recovered from the problem. Today, Exxon is still having to deal with the fallout.
"I want to thank you very much for the wonderful experience and knowledge I gained from attending the Crisis Media Training Course. The encounters during the simulated news media press conferences in your studio was very realistic. There can be no doubt that the hostile questions, bright lights, and TV cameras represent the real world of dealing with the press."
